What is a Callus?

A callus is a thickened and toughened patch of skin, often resembling a firm, rough lump, typically forms on the hands or feet due to recurrent pressure and friction caused by footwear, frequent use, or less-than-ideal foot mechanics.

This condition is generally not a cause for concern unless there are underlying factors to consider, such as diabetes, neuropathy, or a compromised immune system.

How EC Podiatry Treats Calluses

Personal Care To Fit Your Needs

EC Podiatry uses three main applications when it comes to removing calluses:

Callus removal through gentle debridement and sanding, which involves the careful removal of calloused skin using specialised tools, such as pumice stones or callus shavers, to gradually reduce the thickness and provide relief.

The application of keratolytic agents like creams and acids can be effective in softening and breaking down thickened skin, typically found in calluses. These agents are often available over-the-counter and are applied regularly to reduce callus size.

Footwear education, coupled with the use of protective padding, plays a crucial role in managing calluses. Learning about appropriate footwear and incorporating protective padding, like foam or silicone inserts, helps minimise friction and pressure on the affected areas, contributing to overall foot comfort and preventing callus formation.

In Case You Still Have Questions

To care for your feet and maintain their health, you can follow a simple routine. Start by giving your feet some TLC with a relaxing soak. Fill a basin with warm, soapy water, and immerse your feet. This step helps soften any calluses or tough skin.

After your feet have soaked for a while, take a gentle approach to remove calluses. You can do this by using a pumice stone or a chiropody stone. These specialised tools are designed to exfoliate the skin carefully, helping to eliminate calloused areas without causing discomfort.

Following the exfoliation, it’s important to keep your skin moisturised. Apply a moisturiser generously to your feet to lock in hydration and maintain their softness. This step contributes to overall foot health.

While self-care is valuable, it’s also wise to seek professional guidance. Consider scheduling regular maintenance appointments with a podiatrist. They can offer expert advice and ensure that your feet receive the necessary attention to stay in the best possible condition. This holistic approach to foot care helps you maintain comfortable, healthy feet for the long term.

Not necessarily. Calluses often form as a natural response to repeated friction or pressure on the skin. While they can be caused by ill-fitting shoes or poor foot mechanics, they aren’t always indicative of an underlying foot problem. However, if you have painful calluses that don’t improve with home care or if you have conditions like diabetes or neuropathy, it’s essential to consult a podiatrist for proper evaluation and care.
